The Bulgarian Medical Association was established in its current form in 1999. Membership is compulsory for all 99,000 physicians in Bulgaria.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Observation of the Professional Ethical Code and improvement of physicians’ social status
- Participation in negotiations for the National Framework Contract
- Maintenance of the registry of physicians
- Organisation of continuing medical education
- Strengthening relations with the medical associations of neighbouring and other countries
Regional Medical Colleges
- Observation of the Professional Ethical Code and improvement of physicians’ social status
- Maintenance of the local registry of physicians
- Organisation of local continuing medical education
Medical education
Basic Medical Education
- The minimum duration of study for acquiring a medical degree is 6 years / 4965 hours
- The medical universities define the content of basic medical training
Specialty Training
- The Scientific Medical Societies define the content of specialty training
- Changes are implemented by an order issued by the Ministry of Health
- Specialty training takes place at university hospitals and general hospitals that are accredited for training activity
- Certificates for specialty training are issued by the medical universities
- Specialty qualifications from abroad are recognised by the Ministry of Health
Continuing Medical Education /
Continuing Professional Development (CME / CPD)
- CME and CPD are voluntary in Bulgaria, but it is recommended that physicians accumulate 150 credits, equalling 150 hours of CME, over a three-year period
- The Bulgarian Medical Association is responsible for CME/CPD regulations
- Accreditation of training events takes into account the duration of the event, its compliance with professional guidelines and the level of competency of the lecturers
