The Czech Medical Chamber was established in its current form in 1991. Membership is obligatory for all 42,000 physicians practising in the Czech Republic.

The Chamber’s basic organisational units are district associations of physicians
(in Prague: The Municipal Association of Physicians).

 

Tasks and responsibilities 

• Review and defend the rights and the professional interests of members
• Ensure that members execute their profession in conformity with the highest professional standards, as well as with the principles of medical ethics and with the law and chamber’s rules
• Maintain the register of members
• Participate in negotiations concerning the tariffs for individual medical procedures
• Take part in competition proceedings to fill leading positions in the healthcare sector
• Establish requirements for the practice of medicine for members in private establishments, for the practice of professional representatives pursuant to special regulations and for the medical practice of leading doctors and head doctors in healthcare centres
• Issue certificates confirming the fulfilment of conditions according to letter c) of the Act No. 220/1991 Coll.
• Investigate malpractice complaints filed against members
• Employ disciplinary authority to the extent granted by the Act 220/1991 Coll.
• Issue opinions on the conditions and forms of continuing education of physicians
• Participate in specialisation exams
• Issue - on behalf of members - statements about the professional challenges ofproviding healthcare and obstacles in medical research
• Engage in other activities as permitted by special laws   

Medical education

 

Basic Medical Education 

• The minimum duration of study for acquiring a medical degree is 6 years / 12 semesters / 5,500 hours
• The Czech Ministry of Health defines the content of basic medical training 

Specialty Training 

• The Czech Ministry of Health defines the content of specialty training in co-operation with professional associations and the Czech Medical Chamber
• Specialty training takes place at certified hospitals and healthcare providers
• Certificates for specialty training are issued by the Czech Ministry of Health
• Specialty qualifications from abroad are also recognised by the Czech Ministry of Health 

Continuing Medical Education /
Continuing Professional Development (CME / CPD) 

• CME and CPD are compulsory in the Czech Republic
• The Czech Medical Chamber is responsible for CME/CPD regulations
• CME diplomas are issued by the Czech Medical Chamber and are valid for 5 years
