The Medical Chamber of Slovenia was established in its current form in 1992. Membership is obligatory for physicians in Slovenia.

 

Tasks and responsibilities 

• Protecting and representing the interests of the medical profession
• Adopting the Code of Medical Deontology, monitoring conduct of doctors and taking measures in the event of code violations
• Keeping a register of doctors
• Granting, extending and withdrawing of licenses
• Planning, monitoring and supervising specialisation and other forms of postgraduate professional training
• Cooperating with other medical associations and professional organisations at home and abroad
• Cooperating in the preparation of laws, implementing regulations, contracts, strategic planning and other documents, and other regulations regarding the medical sector
• Cooperating in negotiating collective agreements on behalf of both private practitioners and employers / Determining medical tariffs
• Consulting, providing assistance and representing the interests of members in the fields of law, the economy, analysis, finances and other fields related to the medical profession
• Enabling access to insurance and/or conclusion of contracts regarding damages liable to occur with private practitioners and doctors employed by private employers
• Preventing illegal medical practice
• Monitoring the needs of doctors, offering assistance to unemployed doctors regarding employment and assisting in ensuring replacements for leaves of absence

Medical education

 

Basic Medical Education  

• The minimum duration of study for acquiring a medical degree is 6 years / 12 semesters / 5,500 hours
• The universities define the content of basic medical training (state approval)

 Specialty Training  

• The Scientific Societies and the Medical Chamber define the content of specialty training
• Specialty training takes place at general hospitals, university hospitals and authorised specialist trainers
• Certificates for specialty training are issued by the Medical Chamber
• Specialty qualifications from abroad are recognised by the Ministry of Health (EU) and the Medical Chamber (outside EU)  

Continuing Medical Education /
Continuing Professional Development (CME / CPD)   

• CME and CPD are compulsory in Slovenia
• The Medical Chamber is responsible for CME/CPD regulations
• Fifteen days per year of CME/CPD are allotted for each physician
